Does anyone know how to bring down a fever quickly?

Kelli A - 2006-07-27 17:42:51 - Alternative Medicine

I have someone (an adult) with a fever of 101.6. Does anyone know how to naturally bring it down quickly? I have him soaking in a cool tub right now. I've given him Ibuprofen 800mg,chicken soup and plenty of fluids. Any and all treatments are appreciated.

fever is the natual reaction of the immune system. it's not always a bad thing.

You are doing the right thing. External cooling is the most effective method of rapid fever reduction. B

The cold water in tub if he has heart disease and other factors could cause him to go into shock, get medical help and advice.

Put a cold hand towel on his head while he's in the tub.. keep him away from the hot stuff and consider the ER to see what's wrong with him.

You're doing the right things. A cool, wet cloth on the forehead should help as well.

Tylenol is actually more effective at reducing fevers than ibuprofen, so give your friend a dose of extra-strength Tylenol ASAP (it's okay that he just took ibuprofen). You may actually want to have your friend take a dose of Tylenol as often as the bottle says it is allowable, from now until he's feeling much better. This will help prevent the fever from returning with quite so much of a vengeance after the first dose wears off. I'd get your friend out of the cool tub and put him in bed, by the way. Lukewarm baths are good for dangerously high fevers, but they are REALLY miserable when you're sick, and his fever isn't high enough to warrant the torture. Additionally, a cold bath is actually going to encourage his body to INCREASE its internal temperature, in order to fight off the shivers that come along with being cold. This is not a plus! So, try the Tylenol, and other than that, don't worry too much unless his fever continues to go up instead of down.

Don't give him chicken soup or the cool bath. The chicken soup will bring his temperature up because it warms the internal temp. A cool bath will shock the system when you have a high fever. Put them in a tub with room temperature water. Cool, clear fluids are great. Not apple juice or anything like that because apples dehydrate you. Make sure they dress lightly. I hope this helps you.

You sound like you're doing everything right. 101.6 is not terribly high, sometimes a fever is the body's way of fighting off infection. Is the person elderly? You may also want to try cold compresses under the armpits. This helps in bringing the temperature down.

The body is fighting off an infection. Support the person's immune response with 1000 mg of Vitamin C every 2 hours. Your body will appreciate it, and the fever will go down sooner. The age old chicken soup remedy has its nutrient value, but it gives the liver something else to chug on, and when a person is sick, we really don't want to give the liver more work than it has to. Find vegetable broth or boil a bunch of largely cut vegetables and add sea salt (if you have it) if not regular salt will do.

ok heres what I was taught in europe and it works.....strip them down to the under garments lay them on the bed and turn the AC on cool or use a fan to repel the warmth from the body...place cool wash cloths on all pulse points..wrists, neck..and so on...do not cover them with blankets, they will complain like mad that they are cold and even start to shiver and shake...DO NOT cover them bac up...you will keep heat trapped round the body...give them fever reducer according to the box and drink sips not gulps! of cold COLD water or if prefered water with juice...it has to be as cold as you can get it...suck on ice or ice-lolly...the body rases the temp to kill of what ever it is fighting off, but if it gets to high it can make you very sick , vomit, pass out and even death! the cold stops the enzymes in the body from over reacting and slows the body down...since germs can not survive in extreams of temperature the body temp should drop....take temp reading every 30 mins...if there is no change in 1-2hrs...get to the hospital...they will give a shot to drop the temp and administer an IV for fluid loss. I hope this helps!

Ice packs and cold water are good. Also, if it is persistant, alternating asperine and tylenol, back and forth is pretty common advice.

A fever is the body's way of fighting off infections. Keep giving ibuprofen. you can take rubbing alcohol and wipe the back, arms, and legs. Cool towel's under the arms and back of neck work well.

SusanHH - 2006-07-28 07:10:21
The high temp of the fever is fighting infection. Probably won't hurt to leave it high.

- ice packs all over body, or put some ice in that tub. you can also alternate between ibuprofen and motrin, to make sure his fever doesn't spike when ibu starts wearing off.
