FAQ Possible causes of clipping.what amp is better for my subs?

spnkysprky - 2008-01-22 21:05:23 - Car Audio

Im gonna try to explain this simple and short. This is for the average JOE not enthusiast/competitors: most amps are rated at 14 volts or higher..so when an amp says 400watts rms...thats usually at 14.4 volts or higher.Lets be realistic...Most of us will not achieve a true 14.4 volts..more like 12.6 to 13.8...that being said, that 400watt amps now drops realistically to 300watts or even less....so we tend to turn up the gains but then thats where the clipping begins. This is where the argument stems that you need a bigger amp..so look for amps that can achieve the power you desire at the lowest possible voltage...understand?Once you do that you can adjust your amp to desired "average" power you need.I suggest you adjust amp with car running and with head lights on.Just becareful not to overdo it. Also, running a smaller amp will not hurt the sub.If that was true they wouldnt put a RMS range on speakers..most speakers EX: sat 50-120watts rms. That being said, the underpower issue is flawed Its when you have a 200 watt amp on a 400watts sub and you try and turn the gains up higher to make them louder....if you would just keep the gains set at 200watts or less actually, the amp will not struggle! It will be fine and so will the sub!If you want more power, then BUY a more powerful amp...simple as that

Good statement. Iv'e got some clipping 6.5" speakers that are fixed because I just turned the bass down. Hey Ohm, thats sweet, mine drops about .3 volts or so also.

*My system voltage stays right at 14.5volts while running. It MAY drop to 14.3 during heavy bass notes... -had to brag. Keep in mind. When you double power, you only get an increase of 3dB's, which is hardly noticable to the average persons' ear -most people can't tell a difference. So to go from 300 to 400watts would be completely unnoticeable. Plus, you should never use your ears to set the gains, unless like me, you can hear clipping. Some HIGHLY RECOMMENDED reading on too low of power; http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp~TID~74226~PN~1
